Get Eco-friendly on your Mobile Phone with the Samsung Blue Earth

Being eco-friendly is fast becoming a trend these days.  Just about every appliance is getting green.  This time you have a green mobile phone.  Samsung calls it Blue though - the Samsung Blue Earth. ' Samsung's second environment friendly mobile phone after the Samsung Reclaim SPH-M560.

First seen at the Barcelona Mobile World Congress, the new handset from the Korean mobile phone giant gets officially lunched this November hopefully in time for a market release this coming holiday.

Environment-Friendly Features

So what makes the Blue Earth environment-friendly?  For a start, Samsung claims the handset had been designed to be eco-friendly right from the drawing board all the way to packaging.  Its materials are made from recycled Post Consumer Materials ' a more polite and sanitized description of discarded water bottles but without harmful substances like BFR (Brominated Flame Retardants), PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and Phthalate.

Technical spec-wise, it's got a 5-star rated energy efficient charger that consumes only 0.03W of electric power on standby which is what it could be most of the time as the handset is solar-chargeable.  Its back cover, with the exception of the 3.2 megapixel camera, is almost made entirely of solar cells that harness direct sunlight to provide 4 hours of talk time after being exposed to the sun for 14 hours.

Just make sure to take it out before the sun melts the plastic body.  But you can be confident never to get those low bat warnings during the day.  Just get out into the open on a clear sky when you have to take or make a call while running on low battery.

High End Features

Eco friendly or not, the Samsung Blue Earth isn't going to make the grade if not for features we expect a high end mobile phone to have.  With upscale features that put it at par with the best out there, it doesn't disappoint.  Sporting a monoblock touchscreen form factor that takes the name seriously with an all-blue body and blue sky homescreen wallpaper, the Blue Earth is first and foremost your 2G quad band GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 and a dual band UMTS 900/2100 on 3G Network with HSDPA/HSUPA.

Nothing beats that for a truly fast no-wait internet surfing experience on the road.  Local wireless data transfers get high speed benefits with Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and WiFi 802.11b/g.

Its multimedia experience starts with an expansive 3-inch wide-VGA TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colors and the usual accelerometer for auto-rotate landscape or portrait viewing with the tilt of the handset. Imaging gets a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash, face recognition, VGA video recording at 30 frames per second and geo-tagging with its GPS/A-GPS support.

A secondary VGA camera on the front fascia allows convenient 3G video calls.  Its internal memory is on the modest side but you get microSD support for up to 16 GB of external memory.

A microSD support or up to 16GB, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and A2DP, WiFi and stereo FM radio with RDS complete the feature set, to mention the major ones.  It looks like Samsung has a winning green mobile phone in a blue body.  Hopefully its price is as friendly to the wallet as it is to the environment.
